5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Family

Earth Day is a great time to focus on taking care of our planet.

We all know Earth Day is right around the corner, but what does that mean when it comes to celebrating the annual event with our family?

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, when nearly 20 million Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a “healthy, sustainable” environment.

The idea for Earth Day was hatched by Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, who was distressed after he saw the aftermath of the Santa Barbara, California, oil spill in 1969.

Over the past 48 years, Earth Day has grown and evolved into a global event. Today, Earth Day is celebrated by nearly one billion people in 192 countries.

The Importance of Protecting Our Planet

As parents, it’s important to educate our families about the importance of protecting the planet because God has appointed each of us as stewards of the Earth. Earth Day helps us focus on preserving the gift we have been given and focus on continuing to cultivate and appreciate the Earth’s beauty and value.

By Protecting the Planet, We're Protecting Our Families

It’s easy to forget that protecting the Earth isn’t just about protecting a planet; it’s about protecting our families. Pollution in our air, water, soil and food supply not only hurts the planet; it hurts our children.

Ways to Celebrate

Here are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day with your family.

  1. Plant a tree. What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by planting a tree. Planting a tree helps the planet by helping to reduce carbon dioxide levels, reduce ozone levels, reduce erosion, and provide an ecosystem for animals, insects, and other life.
  2. Take a hike. A simple way to celebrate Earth Day is to get outdoors, take a hike and gaze in wonder at God’s beautiful creation.
  3. Clean up a local park. Gather your friends, family, and acquaintances and join together to clean up a local park or community area. Having your family give back to the community and celebrating Earth Day at the same time is a win-win for everyone.
  4. Switch to an eco-friendly product. Eco-friendly products are now easily accessible online and on the shelves of your local stores, so switching to an eco-friendly product will be a painless but effective way to make a difference.
  5. Make a craft out of a recyclable product. There are so many fun Earth Day crafts you can make with things you (most likely) already have lying around your house or, even better yet, in your recycling container! Make tin can drums out of old soup or vegetable cans, upcycle old baby food jars into glass candle votives, make a bird feeder out of an old milk jug, make flowers out of egg cartons, make a fun little car out of old toilet paper rolls and used bottle caps, or use old plastic bottle caps to create adorable ladybugs. Whatever you choose to make out of your recyclable products, the list of things you can create is endless.

There are so many meaningful ways to celebrate Earth Day, but whatever you choose to do, be creative and make the most of the time spent with your family.
